Item Verband tussen genade en werke in lQS se reddingsbegrip(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995-09-20) Semmelink, J.W.The relationship between faith and works in the soteriology of 1QS: An analysis was made of 1 QS to construct its view on grace and works in salvation. The author contends that Qumran makes much of works and that E P Sanders understated this element. Salvation according to lQS can best be described by the modem term "synergism".Item Kontoere van 'n weerwoord(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995-09-20) Le Roux, J.H. (Jurie Hendrik), 1944-The outline of an answer: This article is a response to J A Loader's evaluation of my book, "A story of two ways". It is argued that neither Loader nor any other scholar referred to in the book were deliberately belittled or degraded. Every Old Testament scholar mentioned in "Story" was depicted with the greatest respect and a sincere attempt was made to understand each one. Loader is therefore accused of a one-sided Loader-centric reading. To illustrate my point some important aspects with regard to "Story" are highlighted: the intention of the book, the way in which the book received its name, the problems attached to contemporary history writing, etcetera. The main part of the paper consists of an investigation into Loader's historical approach to the Old Testament.Item Berit in Psalm 741(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995-09-20) Human, Dirk J.This article is an attempt to understand the concept 'berit' in Psalm 74:20. Several possibilities regarding its significance and content were discussed by various biblical scholars. The vague reference to 'berit' makes a convincing solution in this regard very difficult. A combination of allusions and motives in the Psalm which coincide with aspects of the Yahweh-David 'berit', strengthens the assumption that J1"':l~ ~:l;' (v 20) alludes to the loyalty and faithfulness of Yahweh which he promised in the 'berit' with his servant David.Item Met watter gesag se U hierdie dinge? Opmerkings oor kerklike dokumente oor die openbare lewe(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995-09-20) De Villiers, D.E. (Dawid Etienne); Smit, D.J."What authority do you have to say these things?" Remarks on church documents about public issues: For a number of reasons it has become important for South African churches to reconsider the ways in which they were accustomed to speak about public issues. In the first part of the article some of these reasons are pointed out. In the second part an important study of the German Protestant Church, the EKD, addressing these issues, is analysed. In the third part an assessment is made of the contribution the German study makes to the debate on church declarations on public issues in the South African context.Item Naggesigte van Sagaria teen die agtergrond van konflik in die vroee na-eksiliese gemeenskap in Juda(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995-09-20) Bartlett, André L.The Night Visions of Zechariah against the background of conflict in the early postexilic community in Judah. In this article Paul D Hanson's view that the Night Visions of Zechariah should be interpreted against the background of a situation of conflict in post-exilic society is taken up. His description of the text as a hierocratic document aimed at the restoration of the pre-exilic status quo is however challenged. It is indicated that the Night Visions should rather be read as text purporting to inspire its readers towards involvement in the processes of change in society. Different levels of meaning, reflecting various aspects of the conflict in the community, can be indicated in the text.Item Ironie as sleutel tot die verstaan van Psalm 14(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Botha, Philippus JacobusThe Gattung of a psalm is generally still regarded as the key to its interpretation. Since Psalm 14 shows relatedness to a number of different genres, inter alia to wisdom literature and prophecy, there is little or no consensus on how it should be interpreted. It is argued in this paper that the textual strategy of a poem such as Psalm 14 should be regarded as the key to its interpretation rather than a genre classification. Through a poetic analysis of Psalm 14 it is shown that irony plays such a key role in the psalm. Cognizance of this feature of the psalm focusses attention on its coherence and unity and opens up a new avenue of understanding.Item LXX-sitate in die Petrus- en Paulusredes van Handelinge(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Steyn, Gert JacobusThis article is an attempt to summarize the results of the author's doctoral thesis. Three aspects of the problem under investigation are discussed, i e the texthistorical, methodological and hermeneutical aspects. The following became clear after analyzing the citations in the Petrine and Pauline speeches: (a) the reconstructed LXX Textvorlage which Luke has used, reflects a strong Semitic style; (b) some quotations were already used in pre-Lukan times, but seem to be checked and reinterpreted by Luke; (c) his use of Scripture functions on two levels: informative, focusing on the past with a strong christological trend, and normative, focusing on the present and future with an appealing nature for the current listeners/readers; and (d) Luke's understanding of Scripture fits in within his salvation history, presented from a Theo-centric perspective, pneumatological-prophetically mediated, and with emphasis on the eschatology, christology and soteriology.Item "Daar is die Lam van God..." Plaasvervangende offertradisies in die Johannesevangelie(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Van der Watt, J.G. (Jan Gabriel), 1952-The issue of substitutionary sacrifice in John's Gospel is hotly debated. In this article it is argued that there are clear traces of this tradition in the Gospel, although it receives little emphasis. The hypothesis is argued that the author concentrates on the positive aspects of salvation. He does not deal with the question of Jesus' treatment of sin and guilt as such. However, with the scattered remarks through the Gospel about substitution and sacrifice, a clear indication is given that Jesus also deals with sin (I :29). Due to the positive theological focus in the Gospel this theme is not further developed, but simply stated briefly. When the question about the treatment of sin comes into focus (i e 1 John), no hesitation is displayed in using "typical" sacrificial and substitutionary terminology.Item Analogiese eksistensie (2). Aantekeninge by die etiek van J A Heyns(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Van Wyk, J.H. (Amie)In a previous article it has been argued that at the heart of Heyns's ethics lies the idea of analogical existence, which basically means that man must reflect God because he is created in the image of God. In that connection a few features of the ethics of Heyns were explained, a discussion which is being continued in this article.Item Hoorder en sy konteks(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Vos, C.J.A. (Casparus Johannes Adam), 1945-The importance of the context of the hearer with regard to homiletics are exploited. Concepts, such as modernisation and secularisation are explained to clarify the context of the hearer. The thesis that homiletics should accept the challenge which modernisation poses to the church, is defended.Item Bybelkunde as eiesoortige teologiese dissipline binne 'n veranderende Suid-Afrikaanse konteks(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Joubert, Stephan Jacobus, 1958-Biblical Studies balances on the dividing line between different realities: between the religious experiences expressed in the Bible and contemporary theological interpretations thereof, and between the scientific activities of modern universities and reflections on God's saving acts in history in different religious communities. Within these spheres Biblical Studies must carve out its own niche as a functionally independent theological discipline, by making its own theoretical reflections on the Bible relevant within the changing South-African context. This can be achieved through, amongst others, the study of the history and theology of the Old Testament and the New Testament, the intercultural communication of Biblical values, the exposure of students to different religions on phenomenological level, and the activation of students' creative abilities through a study of the impact of the Bible on various artforms.Item The relevance of social history to the interpretation of the Gospel according to John(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Busse, Ulrich, 1943-The relevance of a socio-historical reading of John's Gospel is illustrated through the analysis of John 2:1-11, 8:33-36 and 21:7. In each case a social senario of a particular situation is presented by utilizing different ancient sources. The results are then applied to the mentioned passages in John's Gospel in order to illustrate the relevance of a socio-historical reading of John.Item Funksie van Elihu (Job 32-37) in die boek Job(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1995) Viviers, HendrikThe Elihu speeches (Job 32-37) in the design of the book of Job are usually evaluated either totally redundant or literary fitting and functional. Why were they integrated in the book of Job, without adding anything new or profound? A literary-pragmatic analysis was done on these speeches to determine their function in Job. The text was analysed narratologically and poetically. This was complemented with insights from reception-criticism ("implied author", "implied reader") and pragmatics (politeness strategies) in order to also read "between the lines". The exigency for the integration of the Elihu speeches in the book of Job seems to be the ironic exposure of the doctrine of retribution.
