    Westerse interpretasie van die "genius loci" van Mgungundlovu

    Die noue skakeling wat argitektuur met die mens se leefwereld het, lei tot 'n bepaalde ervaring van 'n gebou of gebouekompleks. 'n Bepaalde 'genius loci', wat uit die sintese van die natuurlike en beboude omgewing ontstaan, kan dus uit so 'n gebou of gebouekompleks afgelei word. Aan die hand van verskeie formele elemente, wat bewustelik of onbewustelik deur die mens in 'n omgewing ingevoer word, word die 'gees van die plek' ondersoek. 'n Zulu militere woonkompleks van die vroee 19de eeu, naamlik Mgungundlovu, die hoof militere setel van die destydse Zulu-koning Dingane, waar belangrike historiese gebeure in beide die lewens van die Zulu en Afrikaner plaasgevind het, word aan die hand van sekere geidentifiseerde elemente ondersoek. In die historiese literatuur het die sendelinge, handelaars en Voortrekkers (o.a. Piet Retief) waardevolle inligting in verband met die uitleg en aktiwiteite van die inwoners nagelaat. Onlangse argeologiese opgrawings het grootliks bygedra tot die opheldering van hierdie bronne en ook met nuwe feite vorendag gekom.

    Is the "Shroud of Turin" the first recorded photograph?

    In this article I outline some of the more prodigious characteristics of the Shroud of Lirey-Chambery-Turin's image and highlight the inadequacy of the various image formation theories postulated this century. A review is then given of some of the findings of a recently established body of evidence which strongly indicates that the image which appears on the "Shroud of Turin" was produced by means of a technique which (it is normally assumed), was only invented in the late eighteenth century, viz: negative photography. In the light of these findings I conjecture that our current understanding of the level of scientific and artistic knowledge (technology) available in the medieval period (especially c. 1280-1357 AD) is in need of a major overhaul.

    Lewe en werk van biskop Bernward van Hildesheim (993-1022), met verwysing na kuns as 'Die Bybel vir ongeletterdes'

    Bernward van Hildesheim is in 960 gebore en is in 993, op die ouderdom van 33, as die biskop van Hildesheim ingesweer. Dit is hierdie gebeurtenis, wat 1000 jaar gelede plaasgevind het, wat vanjaar herdenk word. Meer spesifiek word daar vanjaar in middeleeuse kringe hulde gebring aan Bernward se bydrae as teoloog-kunstenaar en beskermheer van die kunste tot sowel die sierkuns as die beeldhoukuns en die argitektuur van die Ottoniese era.

    Benvenuto Cellini se soutvat : 'n bespreking van die kunstenaar en sy skepping teen die agtergrond van die Renaissance

    Dit is die doel om aan te toon dat die bestudering van 'n voorwerp en die skepper daarvan vir die kultuurhistorikus of museumkundige insig in die periode waaruit daardie voorwerp dateer, kan meebring. Die omgekeerde, naamlik navorsing oor die kulturele tendense van ['n] sekere periode, kan weer daartoe bydra om die interpretasie van 'n persoon of 'n voorwerp uit daardie periode te vergemaklik. Hierdie ondersoek het begin met die ontdekking van 'n afbeelding van die Soutvat in 'n ensiklopedie. Verdere ondersoek het gelei tot die 'ontdekking' van Cellini as mens en verskeie aspekte van die Renaissance in Italie. Gaandeweg het die Soutvat ander dimensies as 'n ryklik versierde gebruiksvoorwerp aangeneem, en het dit as die manifestasie van die gees van 'n tydperk na vore getree.

    Let's go visit the ruins: oral tradition and settlement reconstruction: two Ndebele case studies

    This article emphasizes the importance of additional and ancillary research methods in settlement studies in South Africa. Settlement pattern studies are essentially multidisciplinary and raise interest in anthropology, architecture and archaeology. It appears however that researchers in these disciplines are careless as to applying alternative research methods which may be utilized during fieldwork. Two such methods prove to be the application of oral traditions and ancillary to this, ethnoarchaeological data. In the reconstruction of Southern Ndebele settlement patterns, the application of these two methods in particular proved to be successful, as indicated in the two case studies.

    Seeing the unseen in visionary painting

    In accordance with Seerveld's cartographic methodology 'visionary optics' is defined in terms of a recurrent set of connections between a certain type of pictorial representation and visual perceptions of mythical meaning. A perennial typiconic format stems from the tradition of painting historically associated with 'mythologising' thought patterns and worldviews. The cases examined to trace the development of the visionary format include examples of Bushman rock art, mural decoration from Roman antiquity, medieval altar painting, history painting from the Renaissance, Romantic landscape painting and modern abstract painting.
