Pressure on the utility grid and aims to reduce carbon emissions have led to the development of micro-grids. Extensive research has been done to optimally utilise the various energy sources present therein. Demand management strategies have also been developed to minimize strain on the national utility grid. However, not much research has been done to consider demand management in a microgrid environment. This article proposes the development of a microgrid for a small residential complex in South Africa. Heuristic optimisation techniques are investigated to ensure optimal energy source utilisation and load scheduling, while minimising inconvenience caused for consumers. It is expected that the system will offer significant long-term savings as well as a stable supply of electricity.en_US
