Item Unique In your domain : utilising resources to strengthen your position in the Library and Faculty(2022-04-13) Breytenbach, AmeliaIn any society, knowledge exchange is critical for development. At the Veterinary Science Library we are increasingly aware of the value of grey literature and information sources for research that are not readily available through commercial vendors. Veterinary science was one of the focus areas in 2006 when UPSpace was launched. As this is the only Faculty of Veterinary Science in South Africa the responsibility was even greater to preserve these resources that may become lost or inaccessible. The veterinary science cataloguer realised that through the digitisation of these resources and adding metadata descriptions the library could become a role player in delivering essential information to Africa and the rest of the world. As the need for digitization and open access become crucial the Library became partners with other veterinary instances like the Faculty of Veterinary Science, the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute and the Veterinary History Society of the South African Veterinary Association to deliver essential information to the veterinary community. Through hard work in partnership with the information specialists the cataloguer establish best practices and important cornerstones to identify resources, assigning metadata and marketing the collections. The veterinary science cataloguer suddenly play an important role in all of this by marketing and promoting her skills as knowing how to organize information, make it accessible through best cataloguing and metadata standards and creating project plans on how to deliver a good quality end product.Item COVID-19 and inter-lending services : challenges and opportunities(2021-08-17) Mtsweni, Maria M.For most of us, 2020 started as just another year, where we made our resolutions for the coming year. Some of us worked on strategies to be a better person, others wanted to eat and live healthier, and there were those who intended to be more involved with their children. Even at our work, we planned to work better and achieve more. Little did we know that a virus would force us to change our habits and ways of living, working and visioning. Within these restrictions, Covid-19 quickly taught us all to be much more creative and innovative, and if there is one thing that we learned in 2020, it is that things can be done differently – and still going on. This presentation is a brief explanation on how UP experienced 2020 starting with our challenges, and how we turned these challenges into opportunitiesItem Preserving South Africa’s veterinary history : a collaborative approach(Pretoria : World Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine, 2020-02) Swanepoel, David; Breytenbach, Amelia; Coetsee, Tertia; Marsh, Susan; World Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine. International Congress (44th : 2020 : Pretoria, South Africa)The history of veterinary science and education in South Africa is embedded within the colonial history of South Africa and is essential to understand and appreciate its contribution to the well-being of the country. Observations on unknown animal diseases that occurred during this historical period in South Africa were documented into written descriptions like journal articles and theses and captured as photos and glass negatives. A vast collection of historical material is available through commercial publications, but it is often grey literature such as archival material, which is difficult to locate, that is crucial to complete the picture. Material and sources with historical value in any country are often difficult to locate, are often dispersed over a large area and not part of the conventional book and journal literature. The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria and its library have access to a large collection of historical sources. The collection consists of photos, slides, documents, proceedings, posters, audiovisual material, postcards and other memorabilia. Other institutions in the country are also being approached if relevant sources are identified in their collections. In 2006 the University of Pretoria’s institutional repository, UPSpace, was launched. This provided the Jotello F Soga library with the opportunity to populate the repository with relevant digitised collections of diverse heritage and learning resources that can contribute to the long term preservation and accessibility of historical veterinary sources. These collections can be utilised not only by historians and researchers in South Africa but also Africa and the rest of the world.Item RefShare : use in Phytomedicine(2010-11-01T07:09:47Z) Coetsee, Tertia; Southern African Online Information Meeting (10th : 2010 : Pretoria, South Africa)This paper focus on the role of the information specialist in the development of a research platform on RefShare to promote and support research in the Phytomedicine discipline. It illustrated the importance of collaboration between the information specialist, the department and the researchers in order to enhance education innovation and research excellence. The important role of the information specialist in applying new developments and tools for research in a new and dynamic subject field is highlighted.Item Disasters and diseases in Africa : information support for animal and human health(2007-08-30T10:06:39Z) Coetsee, Tertia; Nel, Marguerite Alice; Van der Westhuizen, Erica E.; Lourens, AntoinettePresentation delivered at the 73rd IFLA General Conference, Satellite Session: Health and Biosciences, Durban, South Africa, 18 August 2007. This paper will describe the types of disasters, both natural and man-made, found in Africa, their impact on animal health and how this also influences human health. These disasters include oil spills along the coastline, bush fires in game reserves, and floods. It will highlight the importance of monitoring animal health, especially in the field of infectious diseases as these can have devastating effects on human health. Examples include the dreaded Ebola, Congo-Crimean Haemorrhagic Fever, Anthrax and Avian flu. Biosecurity is an increasingly important issue these days and institutions and countries as a whole have to be prepared to protect their staff and populace. Various disciplines are involved in ensuring the health of people, animals and the environment, and these include the following: epidemiology, (veterinary) public health, virology, parasitology, zoonoses and ecology. The paper will show what information support is being offered in these fields. It will look at the curriculum of the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria(UP), the only veterinary school in South Africa and compare it with other veterinary schools in the USA and UK to see how the veterinary practitioner of tomorrow is being equipped to deal with disasters and emerging diseases. An overview of essential information sources in these disciplines will be given and the information sources collection of the Veterinary Science Library of UP will be evaluated to see if it is offering the information support necessary for the veterinary practitioner in Africa. Cooperative steps that are being taken by the UP Veterinary Science Library and the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (Agriculture Research Council: Animal Diseases) Library to improve information support for all involved with animal health including state eterinarians, will be discussed. The expansion of these cooperative endeavours to other African countries will be explored. The development of a website by the UP Veterinary Science Library to serve as a one-stop e-information source for the country’s animal health workers who will have to deal with disasters and emerging diseases is a logical next step. The decisions that were taken before the final product could be made available included what type of information should be featured, who were the experts we would consult to add appropriate content to the site, how it may perhaps differ from similar sites elsewhere in the world, who would be the target audience, with whom should we collaborate, and what potentially dangerous information should be omitted from the site. By making the information electronically available we are ensuring that the animal health worker, veterinary practitioner, epidemiologist, state veterinarian, or public health official will have the information he needs when he needs it, at any time and in any place where he has a computer and Internet connection.Item Knowledge management and the information specialist : dancing in step or missing a beat?(2007-01-25T09:17:12Z) hettie.groenewald@up.ac.za; Lourens, Antoinette; Groenewald, Hettie; Van der Westhuizen, Erica E.; Van Wyk, JohannPresentation delivered at the 2nd SLIS/OSALL/SAOUG Conference, Midrand, South Africa, 11 June 2002Item Herding tacit knowledge : the opportunity for real teamwork in digitising information resources in support of learning, teaching and research at the Faculty of VeterinaryScience, University of Pretoria(2007-01-18T08:50:14Z) Grimbeek, Eleta; Groenewald, M.E.; Harmse, Nico; Smith, Christel; Haupt, Sanet; amelia.breytenbach@up.ac.za; Breytenbach, AmeliaPresentation delivered at the 5th International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists, Onderstepoort, South Africa, 4-7 July 2005Item Creating webportals for animal health information(2007-01-12T10:27:46Z) Coetsee, Tertia; Van der Westhuizen, Erica E.; erica.vdwesthuizen@up.ac.za; Breytenbach, Amelia; Lourens, AntoinettePresentation delivered at the LIASA Conference, 27 September - 1 October 2004, Polokwane, South AfricaItem Google joins the veterinary curriculum : teaching web searching and evaluation skills to veterinary students at the University of Pretoria(2007-01-11T07:54:10Z) Van der Westhuizen, Erica E.; erica.vdwesthuizen@up.ac.za; Lourens, AntoinettePresentation delivered at the 2nd National Conference of the Health Information Community of South Africa (HICSA), Bloemfontein, 8-9 November 2004Item African dream : e-information services at the University of Pretoria's Veterinary Science Library(2007-01-10T07:13:19Z) antoinette.lourens@up.ac.za; Lourens, AntoinettePresentation delivered at the 4th International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists, Budapest, Hungary, 6-9 August 2003.Item Information service in support of veterinary education 2000 in Africa(2006-10-03T08:32:09Z) Coetsee, Tertia; tertia.coetsee@up.ac.zaPresentation delivered at the 3rd International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists (8ICML), London, 2-5 July 2000.Item Collaboration, convergence and cooperation of veterinary libraries in the 21st century : the African situation(2006-10-03T07:15:49Z) Van der Westhuizen, Erica E.; erica.vdwesthuizen@up.ac.zaPresentation delivered by the 3rd International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists (8ICML), London, 2-5 July 2000.
