NZASM Footsteps along the tracks : the identified extant built residue of the Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij (1887 - 1902)
(Visual Books, 2016) Clarke, Nicholas John; Fisher, Roger C.
South Africa’s extensive rail infrastructure is of vital importance to its people and economy. After a slow initial start the development of railways reached full steam at the end of the C19 after the discovery of mineral resources, gold and diamonds. One of the agents of rapid rail expansion in South Africa was the Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij (Netherlands South African Railways Company) which was active in the former Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (South African Republic, the Transvaal). Over a period of thirteen years, the NZASM constructed and operated five main lines and one branch line, including associated infrastructure. In the process it founding towns and cities and changed the physical and socio-cultural landscape of South Africa forever. This shared South-African–Dutch built legacy lies scatters across the Highveld and Lowveld regions of our country.

Liveable Cities: Zanzibar Ng'ambo Neighbourhood, providing infrastructure for liveable cities
(Liveable Cities Conference 2013 June 17-19, 2013-06-17) Wright, Louis Gerhard; White, G.T. (Gary); urgafrica@gmail.com
The focus of this paper is on the practical expertise and context driven design decisions required in creating liveable cities in developing countries. In determining the relative position of a city’s rank on most liveability indexes, the following criteria are used: safety, education, hygiene, healthcare, culture, environment and recreation. However, most of these dynamics are usually not present in developing cities. In order to form a base for future development, it is argued that the provisions of basic infrastructure [i.e.: clean water supply, electricity and sanitation] as well as the development of functional social spaces are vital. This project combines these two factors by developing a hierarchy of linked social spaces as generated by the existing nodes in the form of communal water points. By means of the lessons learnt during a recently completed project framework for the buffer zone surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Zanzibar’s Stone Town, the basic requirements for upgrading human settlements to liveable neighbourhoods are illustrated.

    Zanzibar: Ng'ambo
(2013-04-17) Wright, Louis Gerhard; White, G.T. (Gary); Van der Westhuizen, Christo
This is a project spin-off of a larger study documenting elements of Outstanding Universal Value in Zanzibar’s Stone Town, the project team was initially required to provide regional analysis of the precinct surrounding the UNESCO world heritage site to facilitate consultants to prepare alternative frameworks for the buffer zone. At the project team’s urging, this two week project grew into a fully fledged proposal for the development precinct.
