Item Onbeantwoorde vrae in die wetenskap : laat ons die studente en jong navorsers daarmee uitdaag(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Smit, P.The university is a institution of hope where the foundations are laid for a better future. This derives from the search for solutions in every sphere of scientific study. Sometimes students and young researchers are concerned that the most interesting scientific questions have already been answered. But clearly even a fraction of the unanswered questions in science pose incredible challenges to researchers and students in every field of scientific endeavour. Apart from the global challenges presented by science, South Africa must be one of the most interesting laboratories on earth. The critical ability to put the right questions to science through dedication and hard work is indeed the key to all research and education.Item Review of current research on group formation in early Christianity(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Botha, J. EugeneIn this paper an attempt is made to gain a picture of the earliest stages of the Christian movement subsequent to Jesus' public ministry. Observations about methodological matters are made and this is followed by a brief discussion of a possible scenario regarding the earliest Christian groups. Some suggestions are also made with regard to the utilization of other disciplines such as social science methodology (with special reference to small group theories and sociolinguistics) which could be extremely helpful in obtaining a clearer picture of the earliest stages of the Christian movementItem Opstanding met verheerlikte liggame in Matteus 27:51 b-53? 'n noukeurige lees van die teks(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Botha, S.P.Matthew 27:51 b-53 is a crux interpretum in the exegesis of the Matthew text. By comparing the semantic domains of lexical items and by determining the subtle distinctions between closely related words, the article takes a close look at the reading of this text. The text is interpreted within its narrative context against the background of the apostolic preaching tradition. Following these exegetical lines, the article makes the point that the resurrection of the saints in Matthew 27:51b-53 is to be understood as a glorified bodily resurrection.Item Jesus deur die oë van 'n marxis : in gesprek met Milan Macovec(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Denton, Rudy A.; Van Aarde, A.G. (Andries G.)Milan Machovec makes a contribution to our knowledge of Jesus by looking at the evidence about him through a Marxist lens. In his book 'A Marxist looks at Jesus', he attemps to understand, from a positive, yet still Marxist viewpoint, the essence of Jesus' message. He makes a radical, unbridgeable distinction between the Jesus of history and the kerygmatic Christ, between what he calls the 'image of the man Jesus of Nazareth' and the 'dogmatized image of Jesus Christ'. Machovec represents a Marxism that is somehow 'different'. He insists that genuine Marxist atheism is not a counter-dogma, not simply atheism turned upside down, but a matter of critical method.Item Worden als een kind. Als welk kind?(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Faber van der Meulen, Harry E.'Becoming like a child' is an idea often expressed in the New Testament in connection with the following of Jesus. However, the meaning of this phrase is not so clear. It has to be understood in its cultural context. The author seeks to clarify that cultural context by discussing the culture-related views of childhood in biblical - especially New Testament - times as these are reflected in biblical, Qumran and early rabbinic literature.Item Revisiting Matthew's communities(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Stanton, Graham N.The article elaborates upon issues raised in the author's 1992 book, 'A 'Gospel for a New People: Studies in Matthew'. These issues concern the relationship of the first recipients of Matthew's gospel to local Jewish communities and the features of the internal life of the communities for which Matthew wrote. In the light of the complexity of reconstructing the social setting of Matthew's gospel, the article aims at locating it in the broadest possible context within early Judaism and early Christianity.Item Invloed van 'n eie werklikheidsverstaan op die verstaan van die opstandingsgebeure : 'n vergelykende studie(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Koekemoer, J.H. (Johannes Hendrik), 1935-; Steenkamp, Nicolaas J.S.This article deals with the relationship between a theologian's world view and his or her view of the resurrection of Christ. The theologies of Barth, Bultmann, Pannenberg and Moltmann are compared. Their views on Scripture and revelation are compared to discover the influence of historical criticism on their different views. These views are studied to see how they contribute to clarifing their respective positions on the resurrection of Christ.Item The Anglo-American paradigm : lost and found in current Theology(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Stone, Jerome A.The main Western paradigm involves: 1) dichotomous thinking, 2) valuing abstraction and stability, 3) the quest for certainty, 4) search for foundations and proper method, and 5) a precise language. Postmodernism often favors the mirror images of these five. There is a third approach in many Anglo-American writers which involves neither alternatives. This article analyzes four contemporary theologians, two of whom, Mark C Taylor and George Lindbeck, are rooted in the newer tradition and two, Phil Hefner and Delwin Brown, in the Anglo-American. This essay may be considered a plea to avoid the traditional postmodern dichotomy.Item Sosiale geregtigheid by die profeet Amos : die landsbelofte as vertrekpunt(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Strydom, J.G.In a previous article the author discussed the issue of social justice in the prophetic books, with special emphasis on the role played by the land promise. In that article he has concentrated on the prophet Micah and come to the conclusion that the land promise, together with its conditions and requirements, formed the basis of Micah's social criticism. In this article he takes the matter further to determine whether this is also true of the prophet Amos. His basic conclusion is that this is indeed the case. Amos also relies heavily on the land promise as the basis for his criticism of the many social injustices of his day. Even matters which at first seem to have no bearing on land and land ownership are indeed closely connected to elements of the land promise.Item Evangeliserende gemeente : 'n leefwyse? 'n besinning oor missionere gerigtheid as aspek van gemeentewees(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Swanepoel, P.C.; Van der Merwe, P.J.The church finds itself in a crisis. The essence of this crisis manifests itself in the fact that the church has forgotten its vocation to be an evangelising church. There are, however, a multitude of factors which hamper the church in the fulfillment of its mission. This crisis, however, need not paralyse the church, but should be seen as a challenge for the community of Christ to become an evangelising community.Item Historiese ondersoek na Jesus van Nasaret in perspektief(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Aarde, A.G. (Andries G.)The quest for the historical Jesus has been a vitally central topic in New Testament scholarship. The article aims at explaining to non-scholars some of the premisses and methods of this historical critical enterprise. Issues concerning the question about who the 'real' Jesus is, the relevance of the quest seen from the angles of both the church and the university, the nature of historical inquiry and criteria applied in historical Jesus research, and the resurrection and the virginal conception are discussed. The article is written from the assumption that the Jesus who matters is both the Jesus of history and the Jesus of faith. It is shown that historical investigation reveals trajectories respectively with regard to reports about the resurrection and the virgininal conception of Jesus in the New Testament and with regard to creedal statements.Item Prediking oor die eindoordeel(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Wyk, I.W.C. (Ignatius William Charles)This article deplores the fact that the theologumenon 'last judgement' has become a museum piece. It seeks to stimulate a new debate on this topic. The author is convinced that this theologumenon is a central topic of the Jewish-Christian religion and should therefore be actualised in such a way that it again can become part of the living faith of the church. The author enters into discussion with Moltmann about God's actions in this world, with Pannenberg about the criterion of the judgement and with Kung about eternal punishment.Item Christelike norme en waardes in onderwys en opleiding(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Wyk, Wouter CorneliusThis article investigates the way Christian norms and values can be realised in the context of education and training. The article starts with a survey of the ways in which, in the previous political dispensation, Christian norms and values were incorporated in career training, in tertiary education and in the programmes of primary and secondary schools. Education and training, however, now have to operate in a new environment, which will be greatly determined by the Bill of Human Rights in the new constitution, the Reconstruction and Development Plan and the White Paper on Education and Training. After examining the implications of this new environment the article concludes by identifying opportunities for actively furthering Christian norms and values within the new environment of education and training in South Africa.Item Formule 'believe as Christ believed' as basis van die Pauliniese ekklesiologie(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Botma, M.A. (Michael Andries); Van Aarde, A.G. (Andries G.)Item Michel Foucault en die historisering van anderswees(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Beukes, C.J. (Cornelius Johannes)In this article the intimate relation between power, history and historiography is explored within the context of the postmodem philosophy/ historiography of Michel Foucault. Foucault confronts us wIth a timeless question: do we recognize our own dicourses of power? Do we recognize the Other, the victims of instrumental reason?
