    Annual book industry survey 2011
(Publishers' Association of South Africa, 2013-09-12) South African Book Development Council; South Africa. Dept. of Arts and Culture; SABDC; DAC; PASA; Struik, Willem; Galloway, Francis; Le Roux, Elizabeth Henriette
An analysis of the profiles of all 141 PASA members actively engaged in book publishing or distribution and 27 of the larger local suppliers which are not members of PASA was made and the turnover not captured by the survey estimated. These were compared to the profiles and turnovers of the 59 survey participants. Estimates were then made of the total turnover values of each sub-sector of the industry to determine the degree the survey participants represented the industry as a whole.

The importance of statistical information on the South African book industry has been noted by various role-players. Apart from the vested interest of publishers and the book trade, statistical information on the industry is required by the South African government through representative bodies such as the Publishers’ Association of South Africa (PASA) and the South African Book Development Council (SABDC). There is also an increasing demand for this kind of information by international bodies such as the International Publishers’ Association (IPA); the Board of the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF), especially since the latter is a partner in the international Cape Town Book Fair; the organising body of the London Book Fair; UNESCO and other institutions.

Book publishing industry annual survey broad trends over two years (2007-2008)
(Publishers' Association of South Africa, 2013-09-12) South African Book Development Council; South Africa. Dept. of Arts and Culture; SABDC; DAC; PASA; Struik, Willem; Galloway, Francis
The analysis of data from the Annual Book Industry Surveys (2007 and 2008) rests on the assumption that the data received from the individual participating companies is accurate. It is not possible to compare the results of the 2008 annual survey with that of the previous years. The participants of the survey differ, and some participants experienced significant changes in their business operations, which had an effect on the survey results. Some participants moved into a higher turnover category, either through organic growth or through mergers and acquisitions. Others dropped into lower categories having sold off parts of their publishing lists. This broad trends report is based on a like-for-like comparison of all the entities that participated in both the 2007 and 2008 annual surveys, in order to highlight the patterns and trends manifested over these two years.

In recent years the importance of statistical information on the book industry has been noted by various role-players. Apart from the interest expressed by individual PASA and SABA members, statistical information on the industry is also required by government. PASA, SABA, PAMSA and PIFSA are represented by the PICC (Print Industries Cluster Council). A cultural observatory has been set up at the HSRC, whose task it is to collate statistics on all cultural industries (that are grouped in similar Cluster Councils) and to feed information to government. The aim of the Cluster Councils is to make government funding available to business sectors for developing their industries; this funding, however, is dependent on accurate and reliable information about the shape and size of the industry. There are also regular requests from international bodies for statistical information on the local industry for worldwide collation, e.g. International Publishers’ Association (IPA) and the Board of the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF).
