Abstract:
Social and physical segregation currently exists between social and ethnic groups within secondary schools causing bullying and a need for a safer school typology. Furthermore, it is found that this causes
role confusion and a need for an environment to enhance the development of the adolescent. The aim of the project is to create a reinterpreted new typology to create a safer learning environment for adolescents
at Tsako Thabo Secondary School and further schools in Mamelodi.
This proposal aims to enhance the development of an adolescent through the creation of a expanded typology, linking to cognitive and emotional development. In this stage of their lives, an adolescent’s main
development is to establish their belonging and their individual identity (Bronfenbrenner 1997; Erikson 1968; Louw& Louw 2013; Wilcock 2006). Furthermore, currently, the typology of the school creates physical
and social segregation causing social and cognitive boundaries causing bullying, and a lack of safety within schools.
