Bags Cilliers Photographic Collection

The Bags Cilliers Photographic Collection is named after Hanke (Bags) Cilliers, whose involvement with the University of Pretoria stretched over almost 50 years. As a student he served on the Student Representative Council and together with Donnie du Toit, wrote the University Song in 1936. He was captain of the first rugby team in 1936 and 1937 and in 1938 the only Tukkie in the Blue Bulls first ever match. In 1945 he became a member of staff and developed the university’s Public Relations Office, which he headed until his retirement in 1980. He was a great force in the cultural life on campus and played an important part in the building of the Aula, which served as cultural centre for the entire Pretoria, as well as the establishment of the university choir (today UP Camerata). The photographs in this collection were taken during Bags Cilliers tenure as director of Public Relations and were used in various university publications. The collection consists of various smaller collections, each pertaining to a certain aspect of campus life.
