ENGLISH : This study explores the contribution of magical realism to the destabilization of gender binary opposites in Reza de Wet’s play Breathing In. Gender binary opposites contribute to the construction of marginalised gender identities for women. The hierarchical nature of these gender identities supports the ideology of a patriarchal centre, and is reflected by realism as “natural, self-evident, fixed truths” and “realities”. Breathing In focuses on the colonisation of the “woman” in a patriarchal society. The study explores and destabilizes gender binary opposites to make alternative views on “masculinity” and “femininity” possible. The identification of magical realism in Breathing In offers the female characters a gender freedom within the binary opposite frame of reference of realism, and consequently reveals interpretation gaps which question and challenge these binary oppositions. Magical realism aims to destabilize realism’s “realistic” reflection of gender binary opposites and to create alternative “realities”, to hybridize gender actions, and so to celebrate the Otherness of the female characters.
