International Consortium on Ageing-Related Pathologies (ICCARP) Audiovestibular Group : fostering international consensus to refine International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) codes for hearing loss across the life course

Abstract

Following the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) decision to classify age-related aetiologies, and a global call for action to systematically classify the pathologies of ageing, the International Consortium to Classify Ageing-Related Pathologies (ICCARP) was established in 2023 under the leadership of Cardiff Metropolitan University. Within this consortium, the Audiovestibular Group is actively working to refine the classification of hearing and balance disorders, aligning with the WHO’s commitment to enhance diagnostic frameworks. This effort coincided with the release of the 2025 edition of the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) on 14th February 2025.
