Abstract
The supply chains across the globe are experiencing growing disruptions;
nevertheless, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are more prone to such
disruptions due to resource shortages and limited technology. The following study
explored how the adoption of new technologies influences supply chain resilience in
South African SMEs, as it relates to the technology acceptance model (TAM) and
the theory of supply chain resilience. A quantitative, cross-sectional research design
was used, whereby data were gathered from 147 individuals in decision-making
positions related to supply chain, operations, and technology within South African
SMEs. Results of regression and mediation analyses showed that technology use
was the greatest predictor for supply chain resilience (β = 0.722, R² = 0.521). As
such, perceived usefulness affected resilience only through behavioural intention,
whereas perceived ease of use had a direct effect and was indirectly mediated on
resilience. A noticeable attitude–behaviour gap was evident, whereby the SME
manager acknowledged the value of technology but could not translate this belief
into sustained implementation. The insights extend TAM to outcomes related to
supply chain resilience and provide actionable recommendations for policymakers
and SME managers, aiming to enhance their supply chain capabilities through
strategic technology adoption interventions.
