Abstract

The Nationale Boeren Handelsvereeniging Bpk (National Farmers’ Trade Association Ltd) was a historical general store and early tanners’ cooperative operating in Pretoria and the wider Transvaal region during the late nineteenth century. Established as one of the first expressions of Afrikaner economic and political awakening, the organisation focused on promoting and protecting the commercial interests of local farmers. The association was officially registered in Pretoria, Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (Z.A.R.), in May 1882. Shortly thereafter, a branch was opened in Pretoria on Church Square (Kerkplein) in a building previously occupied by Richard Winstanley’s shop. The premises were located alongside other prominent establishments of the period, including the Natal Bank and the Bank of Africa. As a general dealer serving the farming community, the organisation provided a variety of goods and services. Historical records also indicate that the association was involved in several legal and commercial matters, including a government lawsuit in 1891 regarding the value of flour and the acceptance of a government offer to purchase a stand and building in Potchefstroom.
