Abstract
The paper starts with a short overview of the history of the use of bibliographic references at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (OVI). Abstracting and indexing journals as at the South African Documentation Centre for Agriculture are mentioned.
The second part describes certain selection criteria such as available budget, availability and powerfulness of hardware. quality and comprehensiveness of information, user interface, frequency of updating, and physical format.
Lastly the appropriateness of CD-ROM in particular, for the current situation in Africa, as well as the latest developments in this field are discussed.
