dc.description.abstract Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease was first described in 1981 in the USA in young homosexual men presenting with opportunistic infections associated with severe immune deficiency. The virus itself was identified 2 years later and the link between HIV and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was established. en_US
